The Scottish Rugby Union has announced that the Scottish leg of the IRB World Sevens Series will be moved from Edinburgh to Glasgow.

The Royal Commonwealth Pool will be reopening for the public in Edinburgh. Located next to any major Edinburgh castle hotel, the pool has been lucky to face a refurbishment and now will reopen for public use on March 21st (2012).

Over £37 million has been spent in renovating the pool, upgrading the 50m pool and building a new25m diving pool which even has a moveable floor. There is also a teaching pool and big gym available and new changing rooms, a cafĂ© and reception area has been built. The pool itself was opened in January 1970 by Princess Anne and was used to host two Commonwealth Games. However, the pool closed in June 2009 for repairs. The building will be reopened in a special ceremony, hosted by former Olympic swimming champion, David Wilkie, and an invited audience. The day after will see several well-known athletes perform in aquatic displays to celebrate the opening. Edinburgh City Council culture and leisure convener, Deidre Brock, said: ‘I'm absolutely delighted to be able to announce the reopening of our much loved Royal Commonwealth Pool following its painstaking refurbishment. This has been an incredibly complex engineering project which has transformed the Grade A-listed pool into a truly world class aquatics facility.’

The swimming pool will now be able to host diving events within the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the British swimming squad have even selected it as the venue where they will carry out their final training in July 2012 before the all-important London Olympics this summer. If you would like to visit this amazing pool which has seen so much history, be sure to book into a luxury hotel Edinburgh and check out the site before things get very busy in the next few summer months. And if you’re feeling brave enough, why not splash around yourself. At least we can all dream of being world-class athletes anyways….
