Germany: Home of the Best Breakfast Ever

While it is never advisable to make generalizations about people and places, there are certain things that one is allowed to say. In Germany, one of the best things about the country is probably a little underappreciated in general, but which is so important to anyone who goes there: breakfast.
Breakfast is an essential part of the day, and no matter where you stay from a Berlin bed and breakfast to the Hilton Munich Park, it is worth going out your way to enjoy a good one.

Called ‘frustuck’ (froo-shtook) in German, breakfast may not consist of exotic dishes, but it is the tradition of the relaxed weekend breakfast that they are best at. These breakfasts are found in someone’s home or a nice cafe, and hotels often do a pretty good version as well. What they consist of lots of fresh bread—seeded rolls, brown bread, pretzels, and brotchen—which form the basis of the breakfast. Laid out alongside the bread is usually a fabulous array of cured meats, delectable cheeses, and mustards. There is also fresh butter, plump jams, and of course smooth and creamy Nutella, all of which go towards making delightful combinations on your rolls. Yogurt, quark and compote in addition to fresh fruit are also part of the feast, which is of accompanied by soft boiled eggs, or scrambled if you prefer, fresh juices, and of course coffee. In southern Germany, having weisswurst (a steamed white sausage) with pretzel and sweet mustard is also a delicious tradition. These breakfasts are long languorous, with the newspaper or book often propped up alongside the heaving table of goodies.

These breakfasts will certainly prepare you for a long day of sightseeing or relaxing and are great way to start any day. While you may not get the same range of options when dining out, there is still usually a healthy selection of foods to fill you up at almost hotels and restaurants, and places such as the Hilton Munich are sure to have a brilliant selection. In Germany, the ‘continental breakfast’ takes on an entirely new meaning.
