Austria is a European nation steeped in a rich cultural history that is evident throughout its cities and countryside. It used to be part of the all-conquering Austro-Hungarian Empire until as recently as towards the end of the nineteenth century and consequently there is evidence everywhere of its glorious past such as the stunning architecture, especially in the capital city of Vienna. Aforementioned architecture means that if, like me, you are a bit of a fan of luxury hotels Vienna will provide you with a plethora of options with regards to indulging your taste for opulence. There are also a wide range of hotels in Vienna to suit any budget, so whether you’ve got loads of dough you’re looking to blow or you’re traveling on a bit of a shoe-string budget, you’ll still have no trouble finding a room somewhere.
Vienna was the home for many, many years of Ludwig van Beethoven and there is a superb museum that you should visit which is dedicated to the legendary composer. Here you can wander through the study that he used to work in, complete with gargantuan grand piano, as well as find mountains of information about the deaf musician. There is also a fantastic bistro cafĂ© on the corner of the street opposite, which I would certainly recommend you visit – the menu is varied and the ambiance is welcomingly homely.
While in Austria you should certainly take advantage of the chance to ski and snowboard in the Alps as the pistes and vistas are mind-blowing. In the west of Austria you will find some of the world’s most ideal skiing conditions due to the proximity of the slopes to your options with regards to accommodation. This means that you can enjoy a few beers at the end of a day spent enjoying some winter sports and not have to worry about driving anywhere after.
